Sucker Punch Announces New Game, And It's Not Sly

10/30/2017

Sucker Punch Productions, the producers of the first three Sly Cooper games, have just announced what they've been secretly working on... and it's not Sly. Nor is it Infamous. It is an entirely new IP, as previous rumors had predicted, called "Ghost of Tsushima." The subject of samurai certainly isn't much of a stretch for the studio, however the time period certainly is. Sucker Punch's title's never disappoint, however, this does leave the future of Sly Cooper games in limbo. Huge thanks to PT_DS who tipped us off to this major news development. Yes, the Sly Cooper Fan Network is still active, things have just been crazy in life lately. Expect updates soon!

Thanks for the shoutout! Hope things go well for you.

To be honest I’am a little disappointed that Sucker Punch isn’t working on a new Sly game. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for them and Ghost of Tsushima looks pretty decent, but to me it feels like the chances of a Sly 5 ever happening are slim. There is still a chance of Sly 5 getting announced (maybe PSX) but it won’t be by Sucker Punch. That leaves either Sanzaru or another developer to do a new Sly game and to be honest, I really don’t want Sanzaru to do Sly 5. Thieves in Time wasn’t a bad game and the gameplay was decent, but the story was piss poor and everyone was out of character, so I don’t trust Sanzaru. If another developer does Sly 5 then I’d be more skeptical. They could do better or worse than Sanzaru.

SIDE NOTE: I would compare Thieves in Time to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Both had good gameplay but their stories were lackluster and their endings were “controversial” to say the least. Although I would say Phantom Pain’s ending is more infamous.

When Sly 4 came out and I wrote up a review for the site about it, I think I rated it as the best Sly Cooper game ever. Period. The older I get, the more I grow to dislike Sly 4. I think that a lot of what made me love the game at the time was just the fact that it was a new Sy Cooper game after waiting for so damn long - I’ve been a fan of the series practically since day one! It’s always been my game. THE game. Sanzaru tried, they tried hard, and they put their studio’s spin on it. I think what worked for sucker punch was that they took what seemed like an unserious idea on paper, and made it serious. Sanzaru took that serious game and made it kinda... goofy. Gameplay and mechanics wise, it was a true blue Sly Cooper game. The expansion of open world environments was a natural progression (also something that sucker punch would have excelled at). Visually, as a design, the graphics were pretty amazing, and it had big shoes to fill since the first three games were so critically acclaimed for their design. Sanzaru making sly cooper games is, in my mind, better than nothing. But that might be all it is. Sanzaru is a good studio, but they just need to work harder on getting the tone for Sly Cooper right. I extraordinarily young when I played the first Sly games. They have a pretty heavy plot for a “children’s game.” I still appreciate it hardcore to this day as a 20 year old. A lot of the dialogue in Sly 4 upon revisiting the game was goofy and targeted toward a much younger audience, and the plot was extremely weak, riddled with cliches, and just not all that compelling. It felt more like a parody of a Sly Cooper game instead of a new installment. Like a fan made game. Which, in a way, I guess it was. I think time travel, personally, was a colossal misstep for the serious, especially in trying to bring the game to a fresh new audience. Everyone is always bringing up the massive cliffhanger ending, but I’m just hoping a new game will put an end to the time travel gimmick and get back to the heart of what the series is about. There’ll probably be another Sly Cooper game. It’s more than likely, I’d bet on it. I’m not convinced it’ll be Sly 5. If it’s Sly 5, nobody except Sanzaru will make it. If they do, I, and most others, will still buy the game, but unless they significantly alter their studios culture, I’m not sure it’ll ever recapture the magic of the first games. However, I don’t think Sly 5 will ever happen. I do think another Sly game will though. I don’t think it’ll be a reboot so much as a tie-in with the tv show. If anyone has played video games inspired by cartoons or movies... it’s... well very hit and miss... typically it’s a miss. In my opinion, tie in video games (with exceptions, obviously) tend to be more hype and gimmicks than substance. This is sounding super negative. I don’t want to be negative lol. I love these games, I love this series. I think it can be saved if there’s people willing to save it and acknowledge mistakes and work hard. I don’t think Sly 4 was bad, just lacking. This is a weird position to be in. During the wait between Sly 3 and 4, the community was asking IF another game would ever happen. Now it’s not really the same. We KNOW an animated series is coming, and can reasonably assume a game will as well. Now we’re asking WHEN and, for the first time it seems, we’re asking about quality. As the years roll on, Sly 4 accrues more and more criticism. The community is older and voicing their opinions and concerns, and I think there’s a chance that Sony and all these other companies involved will listen. We can only hope, anyway. But that’s exactly what the Sly Cooper community - more than any other - is built on: hope.

I am very disappointed about Sucker Punch as well. I know that most rumors - some of which broke here on this very site - pointed to Sucker Punch not working on a Sly Cooper game. But this silence over the past two years was our last hope of Sucker Punch bringing the series back. It seemed possible, anyway. I was a pretty big inFamous fan as well, so I’m doubly disappointed with this announcement. On the past of it wasn’t Sly then at least it was infamous... anything sucker punch makes is gonna be great, but I just wish our favorite raccoon could catch a break for a change. But hey it could be worse, I’ve met people that are still begging sucker punch to bring back Rocket: Robot on Wheels (their first game for the N64 lol)

Sorry about all these typos by the way, it’s past 2:00 AM here in New York and it’s been a long day... it’s already been a long week and it’s just gettin started lol

Don't worry man, I understand about the typos. I totally agree with you on Sly 4, it was too kid friendly and the time travel stuff was unnecessary. I don't really want a reboot because I don't want to leave the story of the original unfinished.

Another similarity I noticed between Sly 4 and MGSV was that both their female leads both caused controversy due to their more "exposing" designs, if you know what I mean.
